Takuma Sato’s name is already firmly etched into Indianapolis 500 history, but in 2026, the Japanese veteran returns with a clear objective: to add a third victory to his legacy at “The Greatest Spectacle in Racing.”
The two-time winner will once again compete with Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing, continuing a partnership that has already delivered success at the iconic oval. Backed by returning sponsor AMADA, Sato enters this year’s race with both experience and unfinished business on his side.
Sato first made history in 2017, when he claimed his maiden Indy 500 victory with Andretti Autosport. In a dramatic late-race battle, he held off Hélio Castroneves to become the first Japanese driver to win the event. Three years later, he returned to Victory Lane, this time with Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing, winning the 2020 edition and cementing his reputation as one of the most formidable drivers on ovals.
Those victories are no coincidence. Sato has long been known for his aggressive yet precise driving style at Indianapolis, a combination that makes him particularly dangerous over 500 miles.

Now, as he prepares for another attempt, recent form suggests he remains a serious contender.
At last year’s Indy 500, Sato showed impressive speed throughout the event. He qualified on the front row, starting second, and led a race-high 51 laps, underlining his competitiveness against a younger, full-time field.
Although a pit lane issue ultimately cost him a shot at victory, his performance demonstrated that he still has the pace and racecraft to fight at the front.
“Last year, we showed tremendous speed and strong potential,” Sato said ahead of this year’s race. “Now, we return even more focused, more prepared, and more determined.”
That confidence is shared within the team. Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing has consistently highlighted Sato’s experience and his unique ability to deliver at Indianapolis, where precision, bravery and strategic awareness are crucial.
Despite competing on a limited schedule in recent seasons, Sato continues to treat the Indy 500 as a primary target. His preparation is meticulous, and his familiarity with the Speedway gives him an advantage that few part-time drivers possess.

In a race where experience often proves decisive, that could be a key factor.
The 110th running of the Indy 500 will once again feature a highly competitive field, with full-time stars and past winners all chasing victory. Yet Sato’s past performances show that he thrives in exactly these conditions.
With two wins already to his name, strong pace in recent appearances and a proven partnership with RLL, the ingredients are in place for another serious challenge.
If everything comes together, Takuma Sato could once again find himself at the front, and potentially join the exclusive group of three-time winners at Indianapolis.
