The Sonsio Grand Prix is always an exciting time during the Month of May. This weekend kicks off the drivers’ time at Indianapolis, as they will spend the next three weekends at the Brickyard. This will be the team’s last push for points until June, as most teams and drivers will put most of, if not all of their attention, on the 500 rather than points. This race can give drivers a huge momentum boost going into the 500, whether it be a win or a podium. Here are five drivers to watch this weekend that could make a big statement this weekend.

  1. Rinus VeeKay

The young Dutchman is coming off a stellar performance at Barber, finishing fourth and giving Dale Coyne Racing their first top-five finish since 2023. VeeKay has had a lot of success at the road course at Indianapolis. He earned his first podium at Indianapolis in 2020, and he also earned his maiden victory the following year in 2021. On top of that, he has also scored one additional top ten on the road course. The momentum could carry on for VeeKay this weekend and help him drive into another top ten.

  1. Alex Palou

The 29-year-old Spanish driver is on track to have his best season yet. Palou has won three out of four races this season and, based on his track record, could potentially emerge victorious this weekend. Palou has two previous wins here and is looking to race to a three-peat. He also has one podium here as well. Watch for Palou to potentially dominate the weekend and continue his domination of the 2025 IndyCar series season.

  1. Scott Dixon

Dixons’ last three races have been nothing but struggles as he has finished outside the top five in each of the three; however, the Iceman could get back on track this weekend. Dixon has had a lot of success on the road course, as he has two wins (One of his wins was during the second Indianapolis Grand Prix, which is no longer on the calendar) and only once has he finished outside the top ten at this race. Dixon could potentially get out of his slump with this coming weekend.

  1. Christian Lundgaard

Lundgaard is coming off yet another phenomenal weekend at Barber, earning his third podium of his 2025 campaign. Lundgaard has also had a lot of success at the Indianapolis Road Course. In 2022, he scored his maiden podium at Indianapolis in the summer race that year. He also has earned twin top-four finishes and an additional podium. Lundgaard is looking to snap his winless streak, and Indianapolis could be the first place where he could achieve this.

  1. Pato O’Ward

Pato is looking for redemption after last year’s 500, and what better place to start than Indianapolis. While he has not had a lot of success on the road course, he has had some success with his resume, including three top-five finishes, with one of those being a podium finish. Pato’s path to redemption could start with a solid run this weekend and could give him a huge momentum boost.
