For Jacob Abel, the 2025 INDYCAR season has felt more like a waiting room than a racetrack. A delayed debut in the Indy 500, inconsistent results, and technical struggles threatened to derail his rookie campaign before it ever found traction. But ahead of the Detroit Grand Prix, Dale Coyne Racing initiated a structural reset — and with it, reignited Abel’s belief in what’s still possible this year.
“Part of me feels like my INDYCAR season hasn’t even started yet,” Abel admitted candidly. “We really haven’t had a race result at all yet, which is super unfortunate.”
That reset came in the form of two high-profile additions: Michael Cannon, one of the most respected engineers in the paddock, and Mike Culver, with whom Abel has previously worked. Both bring not just pedigree but energy.
“It’s relit a bit of a fire in me,” Abel said. “You see it in the whole team; the attitude this weekend is different.”
A Necessary Change After a Difficult May
The team’s performance during the Indy 500 qualifiers was a clear low point. Both cars struggled just to make the show, and the overall morale reflected that.
“At Indy… we kind of hit an all-time low,” Abel reflected. “Fighting against one another just to make the race is a place that no team wants to be.”

Dale Coyne Racing’s leadership responded swiftly, bringing in experienced voices to provide stability and new direction. While the results may not be immediate, the impact on team dynamics was clear as Detroit weekend began.
“Everybody is more motivated,” said Abel. “Not saying we weren’t before, but there’s this new fire from top to bottom.”
Rebuilding from the Ground Up
With limited laps and a series of mechanical issues early in the year, Abel’s rookie season hasn’t had much rhythm. Now, with guidance from Cannon and the familiarity of working with Culver again, he’s focused on just one goal: completing a full, clean race weekend.
“Right now there’s really no expectations,” he said. “We need to execute, run all the laps, get pit stops done, and cross the checkered flag with no issues. Then we can start talking about goals and results.”
That simplicity might be the key. In his words, this isn’t about flashy headlines or unrealistic benchmarks — it’s about laying a proper foundation for what’s to come.
“We all kind of have a no-BS attitude,” Abel said. “We won’t sugarcoat things. That definitely helps.”

Eyes Forward, Mind Reset
After missing the Indy 500, Abel had time — unwanted, but useful — to regroup.
“I did feel truly ready, and that was part of the bummer,” he said. “We spent so much time preparing, and it all just felt like it was for nothing. But hopefully I show up next year as a rookie again — a pretty qualified rookie at that.”
In many ways, that attitude captures Abel’s current journey: equal parts grounded and optimistic. The tools are there. The reset has happened. Now it’s time to see if the fire leads to results.
“I’ve never been more excited to get back into a race car,” Abel said. “Hopefully it starts here.”
