Christian Rasmussen Earns First Career Podium at Gateway in „best race of his life“

Ed Carpenter Racing sophomore Christian Rasmussen found himself on an NTT Indycar Series podium for the first time on Sunday night at World Wide Technology Raceway. Making a total of 71 overtakes over the course of the 260 lap event, Rasmussen completed nearly double the amount of passes any other driver was able to.
“It’s huge,” Rasmussen said. “And especially with how this weekend has gone for us… Definitely the best race of my life so far.”
It was not without gargantuan quantities of adversity for Rasmussen, who was already facing the challenge of making his first start at Gateway. The #21 team spent much of Saturday near the bottom of the timing charts, qualifying on the penultimate row of the grid. However, as soon as the green flag waved, Rasmussen was on a mission to race his way to the front.
“As soon as I found out that the high line was so effective, my car was so good up there, both in (turns) one and two and in three and four. So, I just started running high and I could just pass people,” Rasmussen said.
After his first charge through the pack, Rasmussen ran into more trouble on pit road. Exiting his pit stall, Rasmussen’s car momentarily caught fire. Though the flames quickly went out, it was discovered that as a result, his car was under-fueled, thus forcing Rasmussen off strategy for a large portion of the race. Rasmussen was initially unaware his car was even on fire.

“I heard it on my radio,” Rasmussen said. “Someone yelled, ‘You’re on fire!’ I didn’t see it, but, I mean, as soon as you get going, it’s fine.”
Rasmussen is no stranger to victory lane in Madison, Illinois. He won the 2023 Indy NXT Outfront Showdown at the venue, a key moment in getting the attention of ECR owner Ed Carpenter, who would go on to give Rasmussen his first Indycar opportunity. Ed was quick to congratulate Christian on pit road after the race concluded, after his team earned their first podium since Rinus Veekay finished third at Barber Motorsports Park in 2022, over 1,100 days ago.
Gateway marked the second time in a three race span that Rasmussen earned a career best finish, after a sixth place result at the Indianapolis 500 last month. Many on social media noted his similarities in driving style to Santino Ferrucci, with his “go big or go home” approach to oval racing. In this case, Rasmussen went big, driving from the back to the front of the field on multiple occasions.
Rasmussen now sits just one position and six points behind veteran teammate Alexander Rossi in the series standings, heading into Road America, the track where Rasmussen claimed his first Indy NXT victory.

Trending in the right direction, the ECR driver has quickly become one of the most thrilling to watch in the series. Going forward, increased consistency will be the goal for the Danish sophomore as he continues his trek towards becoming one of the superstars of Indycar.
