Three Keys to Victory Lane at Road America

Road America is one of the most iconic circuits in the world, and when paired with the high-octane energy of the NTT IndyCar Series, it creates a can’t-miss racing spectacle. On Sunday, June 22nd, the series hits the halfway mark of the 2025 season at this beloved track. If you asked every driver to list their top three tracks, nearly all would include Road America. Its unique design draws elements from around the world, blending the high-speed characteristics of Western European circuits, the technical complexity of Central European tracks, and the raw power of American road courses. With long straights, fast kinks, deep braking zones, and sweeping corners, it challenges every aspect of a driver’s skill set. So, who will master it all and reach victory lane? Here are the three keys to winning at Road America:

1. Pit Stop Strategy

Perhaps the most critical factor on this 4.014-mile circuit is pit strategy—specifically, fuel management. Due to the track’s length and layout, stretching fuel while off-strategy can be incredibly difficult. Just two years ago, Colton Herta led from pole and controlled much of the race—until the final pit stops. His team short-filled the tank during an early final stop, forcing him into fuel-save mode and ultimately costing him the win. Last year, Team Penske demonstrated how the overcut (pitting later than your rivals) can be a game-changer. Despite running third among his teammates, Will Power emerged from the final stop in the lead, showcasing the advantage of staying out longer on hot tires while others struggled on cold rubber. Expect the overcut to be a major factor again this weekend.

2. Tire Strategy

With race-day temperatures expected in the mid-90s, managing tire wear will be another pivotal element. The alternate (soft red) tires are likely to degrade quickly in the heat, making them less desirable for long stints. Most teams will face a tough question: when to use the red tires? One approach—mirroring the strategy used at St. Petersburg—is to start on the reds and hope for an early yellow, allowing for a quick switch to the more durable primary (black) tires. Another option is to run the reds mid-race, aiming to shorten that stint and limit their negative impact. Both strategies carry risk, as even a single caution can throw everything off. This tire chess match will separate the contenders from the pretenders.

3. Car Setup Balance

Road America demands the perfect balance between top-end speed and cornering grip. With its long straights reminiscent of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and its high-speed, high-commitment corners, teams must make trade-offs in downforce. More downforce means better cornering but slower straight-line speed; less downforce brings higher top speeds but requires earlier braking and more precise handling through corners. Each team and driver must find the setup that maximizes overtaking potential without sacrificing overall pace. Thanks to the track’s width and long straights, passing opportunities are abundant—but only for those whose setups let them capitalize.

Final Thoughts

Winning at Road America requires much more than raw speed. It demands perfect timing on pit lane, a tire strategy flexible enough to handle unpredictable conditions, and a setup that strikes just the right balance between power and precision. With the 2025 NTT IndyCar season at its midpoint, the stakes are high, and the margin for error is razor-thin. If history is any guide, expect drama, strategy swings, and wheel-to-wheel action until the checkered flag waves. Victory will go to the driver—and team—that can master all three keys and unlock the magic of Road America.
