In July 2023, on the tight and unforgiving streets of Toronto’s Exhibition Place, Christian Lundgaard made history, both for himself and for his team, Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing (RLL).

After showing promise throughout the season with several top-five finishes, the young Danish driver delivered a commanding performance at the Honda Indy Toronto, earning his maiden INDYCAR win in just his second full season in the series.

Pole to Victory: Calm Under Pressure

Lundgaard began the race weekend with a statement, clinching pole position during a rain-affected qualifying session. Despite tricky conditions, he stayed composed and capitalized on the team’s strong setup to outpace the field.

On race day, he led the field from the green flag and managed the race with maturity well beyond his years. He maintained control during critical restarts and managed his tire stints flawlessly, holding off experienced challengers like Scott McLaughlin and Alex Palou.

A Win for Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing

The victory was not only a milestone for Lundgaard but a much-needed boost for RLL Racing, which had faced struggles with consistency throughout the 2023 campaign. The win marked the team’s first INDYCAR victory since Takuma Sato’s triumph at Gateway in 2019.

Team co-owner Bobby Rahal praised Lundgaard’s calm, speed, and tire management, calling it a “complete drive.”

The Significance

Lundgaard’s win placed him firmly on the radar as a rising star in the NTT INDYCAR SERIES. It was also a reminder that RLL still has what it takes to fight at the front — especially on technical street circuits like Toronto.

His victory also stood out as one of the few times in recent years that a non-Penske/Ganassi/Andretti driver took victory on a street circuit — no small feat in today’s ultra-competitive IndyCar landscape.
