As the countdown to the 109th Running of the Indianapolis 500 presented by Gainbridge continues, INDYCAR has issued an important update regarding the eligibility and procedures for replacement drivers. The changes, shared with teams during a recent Team Manager call, aim to clarify the process in rare situations where a primary driver is unable to compete on race day due to commitments in another major racing series.

Here are the key elements of the update:

🔄 Eligibility Criteria for Replacement Drivers

  • A replacement driver may only be used if the originally entered driver is racing in another marquee event with their principal racing series on the same day as the Indy 500 (Sunday, May 25).
  • The replacement driver must be a veteran approved by INDYCAR and successfully complete the Indianapolis Motor Speedway refresher program during the first day of official Indy 500 practice.

🛞 Tire & Setup Regulations

  • Teams will not receive additional tires for the refresher program. Any tires used for this purpose will come from the existing 32-set allocation for the car.
  • Only minimal setup changes will be permitted during the refresher.
  • Once the refresher is complete, no additional laps may be run by the replacement driver in that session.

🏁 Starting Position & Lineup Impact

  • If a team officially declares a replacement driver, the entry forfeits its qualified grid position and will start at the rear of the field, in an order determined by Rule 8.1.8.6.
  • If the original driver returns before the replacement competes in any session beyond the refresher, they may reclaim the entry, but the car will still start from the back.

📘 The official 2025 INDYCAR Rulebook will be updated to reflect these procedural changes.
